(Kitco News) – Kitco ranked the top ten largest gold mines in Australia based on reported production in Q3 2021.
Newmont’s Boddington is the biggest gold operation in Australia with 162 koz of gold produced in Q3 2021. Gold production decreased 9% primarily due to lower throughput, lower grade milled and lower recovery.
Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville mine is second with 135 koz of gold produced in Q3 2021. Production was down 17% compared to 161 koz produced in Q3 2020 due to lower average grade largely related to mine sequencing within the Swan, Audax, Benu and Raptor zones.
Another Newmont’s Tanami mine sits third. Gold production in Q3 2021 of 112 koz decreased 15% compared to Q3 2020 primarily due to lower throughput as the mine was placed under care and maintenance during July 2021 as a result of COVID-19 restrictions, lower ore grade milled and lower recovery, partially offset by a higher drawdown of in-circuit inventory.
Northern Star Resources’ Kalgoorlie operation is fourth. Kalgoorlie produced 109 koz of gold in Q3 2021, virtually unchanged from a year ago.
Newcrest’s Cadia operation is fifth with 109 koz of gold produced in Q3 2021, which is 45% less than in Q3 2020.
The top 10 largest gold operations in Australia produced 1,074 koz of gold in Q3 2021, which is 10% less than a year ago (1,199 koz).
